Wood Boxes and Bins

**SOLD** L369 Rare – exceptional - large-sized early 19th century Bandbox / Hatbox made by Hannah Davis (1784-1863). Wooden construction with the exterior covered in vibrant wallpaper and the inside lined with newspaper with a date of 1833 visible on some of the print.

A paper label inside the lid reads “Warranted Nailed Band-Boxes made by Hanna Davis Jaffrey NH”.

Measurements: 20” x 16” oval x 14 ½” tall.

(NOTE: Hannah Davis (1784-1863) was from Jaffrey, New Hampshire. She was a spinster who, after her parents passed away, became known for the unique construction of her band boxes using thinly sliced wood (rather than pasteboard/cardboard) that was bent into the shape required. Hannah Davis covered the outsides with wallpaper and lined the insides with local newspapers. She proudly applied a paper label bearing her name inside each lid.)
