K1570 Exceptional mid-19th century Pennsylvania identified and dated Wallpaper hatbox / bandbox with wallpaper covered exterior depicting a large estate with people enjoying the gardens and playing yard games.  A very detailed hand-painted scene of St. Paul Academy for Girls on the top of the lid. Writing below the scene reads: “RESIDENCE OF ST. PAUL ACADEMY FOR GIRLS   NO. 26 ARCH ST. SCRANTON PA   MADE BY ELIZA FAIRMAN  HER 2ND YEAR 1858” The clean interior is lined with pages of “The Scranton Republican” (Scranton, Pennsylvania) newspaper dated January 21, 1858. A photograph of a well-dressed woman with “Love, Mother” handwritten on the front is attached to the interior center of the lid and surrounded with a make-shift medallion with delicate, handsewn silk pansy blossoms attached to three of the corners. Several clippings of drawings/prints are also found attached inside the box. Well preserved in great condition!  Measurements:  14 ¼” x 11 1/8” oval x 12 ¼” tall.
