J23 Rooster weathervane, full-bodied copper and iron with original red painted surface. Dates to the second half of the 19th century. Circa 1870. Mounted on custom base for display purposes. Approximate measurements: 18 1/2" long x 4" wide. Mounted height is 22 1/2" tall. (Bottom of base measures 6" x 13 1/4"). One of the most enduring symbols in earlier America was the rooster. It was a dominant image for this country’s classic folk art including weathervanes, wood carvings and windmill weights. |
