L357 American Folk Art Hooked Rug depicting a two-masted fishing and racing schooner identified as the “Bluenose” – with the maker’s initials “E. N.” hooked in the upper left corner of the rug. The depicted ship is at full sails with pennants and a Flag atop the masts. A solid navy-blue border surrounds all sides. Constructed of various types of fabrics hand hooked on early burlap. Professionally cleaned and mounted. Circa 1920s-1930s. Measurements: 40 ½” wide x 28 ½” tall.
NOTE: The Bluenose was constructed in Nova Scotia and nicknamed the “Queen of the North Atlantic” – known for its undefeated record in the International Fisherman’s Trophy Cup in 1921, 1922, 1930 and 1937, and also for holding the record for the largest cod caught. It was wrecked off the coast of Haiti in 1946.
