L408d Rare – 18th century hand wrought iron Phoebe Double Cruise Lamp / Whale Oil Lamp / Grease Lamp / Betty Lamp with decorative cutouts on back and twisted iron hanger. The bottoms of both lamps are marked “X X”. This was a very early type of lamp commonly used in America between the 17th to early 19th century, consisting of two small iron bowls hanging one above the other, with a spout to hold something to act as a wick (twisted cotton rag, rush, etc.). The lower bowl collected drips coming from the upper bowl, creating an efficient use of the fuel being burned.
Measurements: Outer lamp measures 2 5/8” wide x 3 ½” deep x 7 ¾” tall. The inner / smaller lamp is 3 1/8” wide x 3 ½” deep x 5 ½” tall. Overall height with hanger is 12” tall.
