M167 Handmade Hearth Broom with hand-hewn handle and intricately woven top. Before 1797, brooms in America were homemade. Tree branches were often used to sweep the floor and clean the ashes from the fireplaces. Sometimes crude brooms were fashioned by tying something on a stick or handle – such as straw, hay, fine twigs or corn husks. This is a fine example of a handmade broom, from a private collection in Pennsylvania.
Great condition with wonderful patina.
